Through this transformation, the 1.0 hectare / 2.5 acres of gardens on the 4th floor of this downtown Calgary mall now houses a tropical plant selection of horticultural significance, as well as a range of programmed and flexible spaces, including a children’s area with play structures and climbing wall, animated water features and koi ponds, open flexible seating areas, and an event space. Revenue generating events, such as weddings and corporate parties, can now comfortably accommodate large groups, the revenue generated is used to offset operating and maintenance costs for the gardens

The Living Green Wall is a component of the air conditioning along with other innovations such as a fogging system that improves humidity levels locally within planted areas. It also works as part of the fresh-air circulation to condition the air (reducing air temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius). Beyond it, an irrigation control system monitors moisture, relative humidity and room temperature to ensure the best growing conditions possible as well as minimize water use, while water features create white noise and the necessary aeration of the water to accommodate the extensive Koi fish collection.

Located in East Village, C-Square serves as both a gateway to and a gathering space for a rapidly evolving urban community. To create a dynamic, habitable urban condition, the design team worked closely with CMLC to develop two means of spatial modulation to inform the design of the project. The first is a new array of perforated aluminum fins designed to capture and emit light as a shifting, reflective veil while framing connections to and from the train. The second is the creation of a continuous ground-plane – a generous public plaza – that sutures the site as a whole while transforming the site into a space of social exchange and performance..

The Calgary Soldier’s Memorial commemorates wartime efforts and sacrifices of Calgarians and Canadians. Located next to the pedestrian paths along the Bow River, the site is visually connected to the Mewata Armoury and acts as a destination for individual reflection and collective formal processions from the Armoury. Connected to adjacent public spaces, like Poppy Plaza and the Peace Bridge, it is also an important node along the Bow River and Calgary’s new Memorial Drive Landscape of Memory
